It is certain. Over the last couple years we’ve been saying goodbye to minimalism, and we’ve been inviting more and more colors and textures to our spaces. One of the styles that’s making a big comeback is Western American. This style in home decor consists of the rugged, rustic charm of the American Old West as it nods to the cowboy era. It evokes a sense of freedom, adventure, and the great outdoors. Think wide-open spaces, rugged landscapes, and a laid-back, comfortable atmosphere. In this blog post we’ll tell you what are the characteristics of this cowboy style and show you some examples of bedrooms decorated in Western Style.
What Western American style looks like in home decor?
Natural Materials: Wood, leather, stone, and wrought iron are staples of Western decor. These materials bring a sense of authenticity and warmth to the space.
Earthy Color Palette: Browns, tans, greens, and reds inspired by the natural surroundings are commonly used. Accents of turquoise or deep blue can add a pop of color.
Textiles: Cowhide rugs, woven blankets, and suede or leather upholstery create a cozy and textured feel.
Animal-Inspired Decor: Antlers, buffalo hides, and other animal-themed accents are popular choices. However, it’s essential to use these elements tastefully to avoid a kitschy look.
Rustic Furniture: Solid wood furniture with distressed finishes or reclaimed wood pieces create a rugged and inviting atmosphere.
Lighting: Wrought iron chandeliers, lanterns, and wall sconces add to the Western ambiance.
Accessories: Incorporate items like cowboy hats, spurs, vintage saddles, and Native American-inspired art to complete the look.
Now that you know what to expect from Western style, let us show you 21 examples of beautifully decorated bedrooms straight from the West.
1. Cozy simplicity in Western bedroom
At first glance this room looks very simple. Only when you look closer you’ll notice colorful Southwestern rug on the hardwood floor, handmade antique furniture and exposed wooden beams that add a touch of rustic elegance and emphasize the natural materials typical of Western decor. With these elements you don’t need much more decor. In this case less is more as everything combined creates a cohesive and cozy atmosphere.
2. Romantic Western decor
First thing you see when you look at this photo is a beautiful floral wallpaper. It gives such a romantic touch to the room. All the decor present here connects somehow to the roses on the walls. Simple white bedding is covered with red throw pillows and throw blankets. A colorful rug on the floor also includes red elements. We also see a wooden headboard that complements the artwork hanging above the bed. Horse painting in neutral colors fits here perfectly, as it doesn’t take your eyes from the roses around.
3. Brown is the new beige
Brown is probably the most popular color in Western style. In this decor it comes in a warm caramel hue. Basically everything here is brown. We see brown walls, wall decor and lighting, brown throw pillows and throw blankets and brown rug. Also the side tables and bed frame are kept in warm brown tones. To break the monotony someone used white bedding and green plants. Thanks to these elements the overall look is light and cohesive.
4. Western bedroom in cold tones
Here we see the complete opposite of the previous photo. This bedroom is kept in cold hues, but thanks to using natural materials, it still looks inviting. Whitewashed wood planks on the walls look amazing with exposed beams on the ceiling. Together with natural stone on one of the walls, it looks like this bedroom might be in some ancient cabin in the middle of nowhere. I really like the bedding, which reminds me of the cowhide pattern. It fits perfectly together with a cowhide throw and rug.
5. Orange and black Western decor
Nowadays we don’t really see leather bed frames anymore. Dark brown of the leather works perfectly with energetic orange bedding and white and brown throw blanket. Above the bed, a prominent longhorn skull mounted on a fringed leather panel serves as a striking focal point, reinforcing the Western motif. Also please notice cute little decorations on nightstands.
6. Western style with a sprinkle of boho
This room is a tasteful mix of bohemian and western styles. Old wooden bedframe, pendant lights with metal cages and hats hanging above them remind of the Wild West, but are softened by lots of plants, colorful throw pillows and big macrame decor hanging above the headboard together with a round woven piece. The room is kept in neutral colors, but thanks to lots of decor, it looks cozy and inviting.
7. Under the romantic canope
Star of this photo is undoubtedly this beautiful canope. It adds romantic charm to mostly modest and simple room. On the ceiling we see wood planks with exposed beams, they draw a lot of attention so the walls are kept white and work as background. This room could be boring, but the colorful Southwestern rug on the floor adds some energy and dynamic to the decor. Also throw pillows and throw blanket are in the same style and add a splash of color.
8. Throw blankets can save the room
If we wanted to play decorators and remove blankets, pillows and skull, we would get a normal modern bedroom. Sometimes a few characteristic elements can transform a space into something interesting. This photo is a nice example that you don’t need to break the bank to transform your bedroom.
9. Raw Western American
Most of the elements in this room look like they were taken straight from the 18th century. Furniture together with rug and skull hanging on the wall are so characteristic, that the room doesn’t need much more decoration. Even the lamp looks like it was at least a hundred years old.
10. A bold focal point
This bedroom also looks strict but not as extreme as the previous example. We see much more modern furniture, but still kept in rustic western style. A mounted longhorn skull above the bed serves as a bold focal point, reinforcing the Western theme. Additionally, a piece of wall art with another skull design complements this motif. To finish the look we have a cowhide rug and bedding in Native American pattern.
11. Western decor for little ladies
Here we have something perfect for the little women. It’s a more elegant version of Western style. We see a beautiful golden wallpaper which complements the horse painting above the headboard. Add a classical Southwestern rug, throw a pillow and your set.
12. Sturdy bed frame in Western decor
This massive bed frame definitely draws attention, so it’s obvious that we need to think about what we put on it. Bedding in colorful Native American stripes works nicely together with dark wood of the bed frame. It’s yet another example, that the bedding really matters in house decor.
13. Shabby chic in the West
Does shabby chic work with western style? Apparently yes. Here we see a beautifully aged bed frame and nightstand. If we put a neutral or floral bedding the outcome would definitely be shabby chic, but a simple change like using the bedding with western print on it, completely changes the room.
14. There’s no such thing like too many hats
I think at this point we can all agree that the bed frame really plays a big part in the overall character of the bedroom. Here we see an iron bed frame with wooden elements. This bed frame on its own looks like it’s from the South, but together with decorative elements hanging above the headboard, once again you feel like you came back in time.
15. Beautiful hats on display
Antique furniture together with beautifully decorated hats are enough to remind you that you’re in the West. Wood planks on the wall and warm colors of the bedding create a cozy look.
16. Cowhide fits everywhere
Who said cowhide has to lay on the floor? Here we see a creative use of cowhide as a wall decor. Also please notice a unique nightstand and a lamp standing on it. Where everyone goes for wood, here we have metal blending in perfectly. Native American bedding finished the raw look.
17. Antique furniture is everything
Let’s set one thing straight. You’ll never accomplish a real western look with Ikea furniture. Antique elements are what brings all of the charm and character to the space. I would kill to have such a beautiful wardrobe in my home. Pair it together with a colorful throw blanket and rug, and you’re ready to receive all the praise for how beautiful your space looks.
18. Barn door at last
This room is so rich in colour and character that I don’t know what to focus on first. Of course we have here a beautiful bed frame, exposed beams and colorful Southern bedding and rug. Chest in front of the bed looks like it could hide some treasure, but the thing we see here for the first time is the barn door. It is as characteristic for western style as cowhide or bull skulls. The door is kept in dark color like the rest of the wood in this bedroom, so it blends in perfectly.
19. Mirror mirror on the wall
If you love the barn door, but can’t install it in your space, think about replacing it with mirror styled like the barn doors. Sometimes all you need is some creativity.
20. Showcase your passion
It’s clear that someone here is crazy about horses. And that’s awesome! While chasing the trends we often forget what we’re really passionate about and what we actually like. But that’s the first thing you should take into consideration when decorating your space! Don’t blindly follow the trends. Instead collect items that really interest you and show your character – only then you’ll create a space you really love.
21. After all beige works for Western style
Here we have a more delicate and gentle version of the western style. If you’re one of those people who like their bedrooms to be calm, but still want to include this western character, think about going for more neutral and calm colors. Here we see all the elements characteristic for western style, like wooden bed frame, cowhide rug, longhorn skull and antique furniture. Thanks to using white and beige in this room, it looks much calmer and cozier than previous examples.
